Share

The San Clemente Planning Commission unanimously approved a 253-acre housing and commercial development late Thursday night that includes the planned Richard M. Nixon presidential library.

The vote was the first of several city approvals needed by the project, which is among the largest of the prime undeveloped seaside parcels remaining in Southern California. The site is perched atop a 100-foot seaside bluff.

The City Council is scheduled to consider the Planning Commission’s vote Aug. 5. The project must also win approval from the California Coastal Commission.

The development, known as the Marblehead Coastal Project, is planned to include more than 1,290 homes, three hotels and a commercial center, in addition to the 16.7-acre site for the Nixon library.
