JULIE KRONE : LEADING LADY
Julie Krone doesn’t appreciate being categorized as the best “female rider in the country.” Krone, all of 4-foot-10, 100 pounds, just wants to be recognized as a competitive jockey, and she’s doing that at Monmouth Park in Oceanport, N.J., where she’s in contention for the riding title. “The riding title would be nice,” said the 24-year-old Krone, who has been riding since she was 16, “but I feel I’m in a no-pressure situation. If I wind up second, I think that would be wonderful.” Krone has more than 900 career victories. Only one woman--Patricia Cooksey--has ever reached 1,000.
