Men’s 45 Hard Court Tennis Championships : Westminster’s Shapiro Advances With an Upset

Unseeded Charles Shapiro of Westminster defeated 11th-seeded Richard Landenberger of Dallas, 7-6, 6-4, Monday in the first round of the U.S. Tennis Assn. Men’s 45 Hard Court Championships at the Lindborg Racquet Club in Huntington Beach.

Shapiro’s victory provided the only opening-round upset of the 128-player tournament, which continues today with second-round singles at 8 a.m and first-round doubles at 1 p.m.

Top-seeded Gordon Davis of Van Nuys defeated Gary Baker of Sherman Oaks, 6-1, 6-0; No. 2 Keith Diepraam of Sugarland, Tex., defeated Mark Rolan of El Monte, 6-0, 6-1, and No. 3 Jim Purley of Coronado defeated Gary Baker of Sherman Oaks, 6-1, 6-0.

No. 7 Bob Duesler of Newport Beach, the highest-seeded player from Orange County, defeated Ron Spindle of Boulder, Col., 6-1, 6-2, and No. 13 Jim Nelson of Newport Beach defeated Bill Lange of Roselle, Ill., 2-6, 7-5, 6-1.

Other Orange County players who advanced Monday were: Lenny Lindborg of Laguna Niguel, who defeated Dick Keddy of Huntington Beach, 6-1, 6-4; Art Jenkins (Laguna Beach), who defeated Hollis Smith (Los Angeles), 6-1, 6-1, and Bob Hansen (Santa Ana), who defeated Byron Burden (Newport Beach), 3-6, 7-6, 6-4.

Bob Teitsworth of San Juan Capistrano defeated George Horeczko of Ranch Palos Verdes, 6-2, 6-4; Bob Howe (Newport Beach) defeated Karel Placek (San Diego), 3-6, 6-1, 6-4; Dick Leach (Laguna Beach) defeated Bill Nagele (Minnetonka, Minn.), 7-5, 6-1; Bob Clauson (Dana Point) defeated Tony Marino (Rumson, N.J.), 6-3, 7-6; Ron Livingston (Laguna Beach) defeated Steve Martinez (Orangevale, Calif.), 6-1, 6-2, and Herm Ahlers (Dana Point) defeated Steve Dekruys (Corona), 6-1, 6-2.
