Share

Steve Scott, the American record holder in the mile, returns Sunday to defend his title in the Carlsbad 5,000 road race.

Scott, who set a world road best of 13 minutes 32 seconds in last year’s race, leads a strong field that includes Ed Eyestone, the top-ranked American road runner in 1986, and Gerard Donakowski, who won his second national 10,000-meter championship last month in San Jose. Also entered is Thom Hunt of San Diego, winner of the Holiday Bowl Marathon.

The women’s field is led by Lorraine Moller of New Zealand, Mary Knisely of Dallas and Leslie Welch of Boston.

The 1987 Stubbies Pro International surfing tournament begins Tuesday at Oceanside Pier in Oceanside. The field will include the world’s top 30 surfers, plus 18 who qualify from a field of 128. The tournament will also include the Michelob Cup of Women’s Surfing.

Two-time world champion Tom Curren of Santa Barbara, three-time runner-up Tom Carroll of Australia, current U.S. Pro Tour points leader Mike Lambresi of Oceanside, and Leucadia’s Brad Gerlach are expected to be among those competing for the $5,000 top prize.

Trials will be held Tuesday and Wednesday. The first round of the main event will be Thursday, with the main event rounds continuing until Aug. 2. The trials will be run in four-man heats, and the main event rounds will include head-to-head competition.

NCAA women’s tennis champion Ruth Fendick will be one of 56 players competing for the $15,000 awarded the winner of the $75,000 Virginia Slims of San Diego tournament, Aug. 3-9 at the San Diego Tennis and Racquet Club.

Fendick, of Sacramento, was 31-0 in her senior season at Stanford.

Defending champion Melissa Gurney is expected to play.

Because of limited space at the starting area at the Cabrillo National Monument on Point Loma, the field for the 10th annual AFC Half Marathon Aug. 23 will be limited to 6,000 runners. Entry fee is $15 before Aug. 1, and $20 after that date. Entry forms are available at the American Lung Assn. office (3861 Front St.), at Square Pan Pizza restaurants and most sporting goods stores.

The second World Police and Fire Games will be hosted in San Diego Aug. 1-9 by the San Diego Police Athletic Federation.
