One day after he was arrested for trashing a Chicago hotel room and throwing furniture from the balcony, former college basketball player Kevin Ross was given permission by a Chicago judge to go to Southern California to begin a job with the Compton Parks and Recreation Dept.

“I got a lot of frustration out of my life and I feel good now,” Ross said after the hearing in Cook County Circuit Court. “I’m ready to get on with my life.”

Chicago educator Marva Collins, who taught Ross to read beyond an elementary-school level after he left Creighton University in 1982, said Ross’ actions Thursday were a result of his frustration at being unemployed.

Associate Cook County Circuit Judge Michael Buckley Bolan allowed the move to Southern California as a condition of Ross’ bond, but ordered him to return for his next court date Aug. 21.

In his new job, Ross, 28, will be working with children, said William Dawson, a Compton-area real estate developer who arranged Ross’ employment.
