Duarte : Council Moves Up Pay Hike
The City Council has voted 3 to 2, with Ed Beranek and John Hitt dissenting, to increase council salaries from $300 to $360 a month after the November council election.
In June, 1986, the council adopted the increase, which was scheduled to go into effect after the April, 1988, municipal election. However, since that election was moved to November, 1987, members wanted to modify the ordinance.
Hitt and Beranek said there was no need to increase compensation, but Mayor John Van Doren said the issue arose more than a year ago and that council members can donate their salaries to charity if they object to the increase.
