Share

Two Stanton men were arrested on suspicion of robbery Tuesday after department store security guards tailed two suspects from the scene of a Garden Grove bank holdup, authorities said.

No one was injured in the robbery at the First Interstate Bank at Chapman Avenue and Brookhurst Street, according to Garden Grove officers, who said they had not yet determined how much money had been taken.

Police said two plainclothes security guards from nearby J.C. Penney Co. and Sears, Roebuck & Co. department stores reported seeing two men in the parking lot and that they believed an auto theft might be in progress. Within a few minutes, the bank reported the holdup.

The two security guards, whom police did not identify, followed the suspects to a Stanton motel, police said. Later, the suspects walked to an apartment and took a cab to a Westminster motel. With information supplied by the cab company, police said they were able to locate the suspects at the Newland Motel in Westminster, where they were taken into custody without incident.

Booked into Orange County Jail were John Scott Maxwell, 36, and Daniel Ballesteros, 37, police said. Both men listed their address as the Tahiti Motel in Stanton.
