Raiders : Rusty Hilger Comes Through
The new No. 1 Raider quarterback, Rusty Hilger, threw two quick interceptions and four incompletions on his first eight passes in a controlled scrimmage Saturday, then rallied to finish with 7 completions in 16 attempts, including a long scoring pass to Chris Woods.
Marc Wilson, running the second unit, was 6 for 10, including two long strikes to Mervyn Fernandez. Woods and Fernandez are the receivers the Raiders signed out of the Canadian Football League in the off-season.
“Rusty wasn’t really in sync in his first possession,” Coach Tom Flores said. “Then he kind of picked up.
“In a scrimmage like this, when you’re playing yourself, the defense has the advantage of knowing the offense. That gives it a little edge.”
The Raiders will open their exhibition season next Saturday night against the San Francisco 49ers at the Coliseum.
