Newport Beach : Motorcyclist Stabbed After Highway Dispute

A Newport Beach motorcyclist was stabbed early Sunday morning after a dispute with another driver at West Coast Highway and Balboa Boulevard, police said.

Douglas Robert Speth, 25, was listed in serious condition Sunday after undergoing surgery at Western Medical Center in Santa Ana for a stab wound to the chest.

Police said Speth was driving his motorcycle on West Coast Highway when he was cut off by the driver of a late-model, red Chevrolet Corvette. When the two stopped at Balboa Boulevard around 1:40 a.m., a fight broke out between Speth and the driver and passenger of the Corvette, police said. Afterwards the two men fled north in the Corvette on Superior Avenue, police said.

Police said their prime suspect in the attempted murder is the Corvette passenger, described as white, about 30, six feet tall, weighing 190 pounds, with bleached blond hair.

The driver was described as white, about 25, six feet tall, weighing 170, with short, curly brown hair.
