Mike Engleman of Santa Cruz rode alone for the last 35 miles Wednesday to win the 120-mile Nevada City-to-Squaw Valley road race, the eighth stage of the Coors International bicycle race.

Engleman, 29, a former long-distance runner who began competitive cycling 18 months ago, became the first U.S. cyclist to win during the 19-stage, 1,400-mile event. His time was 5 hours 29 minutes 46 seconds.

“The first few surges hurt,” said Engleman, who in 1980 placed 48th in the Boston Marathon. “I never expected to stay in the lead.”

Emanuele Bombini, 28, of Italy, finished second, 5:34 behind the winner, and Jeff Pierce, 29, of San Diego, the overall leader, was third, eight seconds behind Bombini, to increase his overall advantage to 4:43 over 7-Eleven teammates Raul Alcala of Mexico and Andrew Hampsten of Boulder, Colo.

The competition continues today with the 98-mile Squaw Valley-to-Reno road race and the 30-mile (56.3-kilometer) Reno Criterium tonight.
