Cypress : Mixed-Up Police Dog Takes It on the Lam

The newest member of the Cypress Police Department, who disappeared before he even started work, was found hanging around a supermarket warehouse in Buena Park on Thursday.

Sam, a 3-year-old light-brown Malinois--a breed similar to a German shepherd--escaped from the Buena Park home of his handler Wednesday and was the subject of an “extensive” police search, Sgt. Sandy Stanton said.

The friendly police service dog, who has yet to work a day for the department, was found before 6 a.m. Thursday at a Lucky supermarket warehouse only blocks from the home of his handler, Officer Dan Forniss.

The pooch apparently got the urge to travel again Wednesday, just one day after he arrived from Europe, Stanton said.

Sam will be used along with Erko, formerly the department’s sole canine member, to track suspects and evidence, Stanton said.

Now that Sam has been located, he faces three weeks of training before he can go on active duty, Stanton said.
