Defending champion Juli Inkster continued her domination of the Atlantic City golf tournament Friday with a four-under-par 67 to take a one-stroke lead over second-year pro Patty Jordan at Galloway Township, N.J.

Inkster led or shared the lead after every round of last year’s inaugural tournament, and she showed no willingness to have that change this year. The 27-year-old Californian rolled in eight birdies during her round on the par-71, 6,001-yard bay course at Marriott’s Seaview Country Club.

Nancy Lopez headed a group of five players who were just two shots behind the leader.

A heavy morning rain stalled the start of the Western Open again and forced tournament officials to turn to a neighboring municipal golf course to hold half of the first round today at Oak Brook, Ill.

The first round of the 84th Western Open will be played today. The new 54-hole schedule calls for 18 holes to be played today and 36 Sunday.

Tournament officials decided Friday to shuffle players between tournament host Butler National Golf Club and neighboring Oak Brook Golf Club to find 18 playable holes.

The plan called for the back nine of Oak Brook, a municipal course much shorter than Butler, to be used as the front nine for the first round. Nine of the best conditioned holes at water-logged Butler will be used as the back nine.

Steve Schneiterof Salt Lake City shot a 65 at the Lakewood Country Club to move into a three-way for the lead at 135 after 36 holes of the $80,000 Queen Mary Open with John Burckle of Newport Beach and Jesse Patino of Dallas.

Miller Barber birdied the final hole to finish with a four-under-par 68 and a one-stroke lead in in the opening round of the PGA Seniors Tour’s $300,000 GTE Northwest tournament at Seattle.

Bob Brue, Gordon Jones, Jack Fleck and Larry Mowry were at 69.
