The opportunity to train with Bob Messina is not afforded most runners unless they are female and run cross-country for UCLA.

But for two weeks each summer, the UCLA women’s cross-country coach works with non-collegiate athletes. Messina, 38, of Saugus, conducts a workshop and camp for youngsters ranging from 12-year-olds to 12th-graders.

Messina, who is beginning his fourth year at UCLA, and USC men’s cross-country Coach Larry Knuth stage a daily clinic on running at the camp, which will be held Sunday through Sept. 4 on Catalina Island. The camp also features swimming, sailing and cycling.

The coaches discuss such topics as warm-up conditioning, stretching, proper footwear, cross-country techniques, nutrition, weight training and aerobics. They also will conduct a video analysis of proper running technique.

Runners are divided into groups based on their ability level.
