A California Highway Patrol officer reported that a motorist fired two shots on Interstate 15 in Escondido Monday afternoon, but nothing was hit.

Officer B.J. Country was on a traffic stop on Interstate 15 at Felicita Road at 12:40 p.m. when he heard what he believed were two loud, closely spaced gunshots.

“He immediately looked toward the traffic lane and observed a maroon Dodge Omni with two male occupants pass by him at a moderately high rate of speed,” said CHP spokesman Jerry Bohrer of the Oceanside office.

“He noticed that the passenger appeared to be ducking, as if he were hiding,” Bohrer said. Other units farther south on Interstate 15 waited for the car, but the driver apparently took the next exit.

There was no physical evidence, such as shell casings, that shots were fired, so the CHP is treating the report as an unconfirmed incident that will not be investigated further, Bohrer said.
