More than 300 California National Guard personnel, plus a complement of aircraft and trucks, were deployed today to battle forest fires that are raging throughout California.

Guard spokeswoman Sgt. Carolyn Hamilton said troops were being deployed this morning from guard bases in Modesto, Fresno, San Bruno, San Lorenzo and San Jose. The guard has called in three large bomber aircraft from California, two from Cheyenne, Wyo., two from the 943rd Air Force Reserve at March Air Force Base and one from North Carolina to drop fire retardants, Hamilton said. At least 90 trucks statewide have been called out for the fire battle, she said.
