A 73-year-old Lafayette Park mansion that was targeted for demolition was spared for at least six months when the Los Angeles City Council declared it a historic monument. Citing the building’s Italian Renaissance architectural quality, the Los Angeles Conservancy pushed for the designation after the property owners applied for a demolition permit. The two-story mansion at 310 S. Lafayette Park Place was designed by prominent early 20th-Century architects Sumner Hunt and Silas Burns. Under the city’s preservation ordinance, interested parties will have at least six months and up to a year to find cost-effective means of preserving the building.
