On his first rushing attempt as the Canyon fullback, Chris Peery rambled 48 yards for a touchdown against Hart. Peery, a 6-0, 188-pound sophomore, finished with 141 yards on 15 carries and 2 touchdowns, but Canyon lost, 41-21. Peery, however, got in his licks. "We have a reputation of banging people up," Hart Coach Rick Scott said. "But he took it to us and kept coming."

The victory was Hart's 14th in a row. Canyon's 42-32 season-opening victory last season was Hart's last defeat.

Rushing: Saugus tailback LaMark Allen gained only 61 yards on 16 carries in a 14-0 victory over Hoover, but he scored both touchdowns, including a 77-yard punt return. . . . Royal's offense has a history of passing the ball, but this season the team is grinding it out on the ground. Running backs Chad Sourbeer (157 yards) and Sean Maples (104) both had big games in a 21-21 tie with Arroyo Grande. Quarterback Chris Sinsheimer attempted only 12 passes.

Scoring: Alemany's Chris Lobos scored 13 points in the Indians' 25-25 tie at Los Banos. Lobos caught a 14-yard touchdown pass, kicked two extra points, caught a pass on a two-point conversion and kicked a 40-yard field goal with two seconds left to tie the score.
