SportsScope : A Smarting Harbor Plays San Bernardino in Home Football Opener for Ferragamo

Harbor College will play its football home opener under new Coach Chris Ferragamo at 7:30 p.m. Saturday against San Bernardino Valley College. The Seahawks are smarting from their 28-0 opening loss at Moorpark, where they looked like the new team they are.

El Camino College, which opened its football season with a 36-19 victory over second-ranked Glendale, travels to Mission Viejo to play powerful Saddleback College at 7:30 p.m. Saturday. The Warriors got an impressive game from quarterback Dan Speltz, who hit 20 of 29 passes for 283 yards and four touchdowns, the longest ones to Dwight Pickens, who had seven receptions for 163 yards and TDs of 64 and 32.

The Cal State Dominguez Hills men’s and women’s soccer teams, both off to slow starts, play a Sunday double-header against Cal State Hayward. For the men, off to an 0-3 start and finding it difficult to score goals, it will be the first home game. They play at 3 p.m. The women, 1-3-1, play at 1.

The UCLA man’s soccer team will travel to Fairfax, Va., this weekend to play in the Patriot Invitational at George Mason University. The Bruins will face American University on Friday and George Mason on Sunday. UCLA is 3-1 after losing to fifth-ranked Southern Methodist, 2-1, over the weekend. George Mason is 5-0-1. American is 1-1-1.

Flag football registration is being held at the six Gardena Recreation Department parks as well as at the Inglewood YMCA. The Gardena program is open to residents born between 1969 and 1978 and has five age groups. A $6 fee and birth certificate or proof of age are required at the Gardena parks: Recreation, Rowley, Freeman, Bell, Thornburg and South Gardena. The Inglewood YMCA program is open to ages 5 through 12 with two age divisions. Registration will be accepted through Sept. 26 at the YMCA, 319 E. Kelso St.

Rotary International Club will sponsor its first Golden State Grand Prix Metric and Half-Metric Century bicycle rides Oct. 11 starting at the Olympic Velodrome at Cal State Dominguez Hills. The metric, a hilly 100-kilometer ride, will begin at 8:30 a.m. The half-metric, an easier 50-kilometer course, will begin at 10:30. Both will cross Vincent Thomas Bridge in San Pedro and finish at the velodrome. For information, call 945-6366.

Cal State Dominguez Hills women’s volleyball team will play host Friday and Saturday for its own six-team invitational, with a round-robin format in which each team plays all the others. Friday’s opening-round 2 p.m. games are Dominguez Hills (1-1) vs. East Texas State (2-0), Cal State Los Angeles (4-2) vs. Cal State Northridge (6-2) and Sacramento State (6-2) vs. Westmont College (1-2). The second round of three games will begin at 7 p.m. On Saturday, games will be played at 10 a.m. and 2 and 6 p.m. If no team emerges with a superior record, a tie-breaker will be played. The tournament is free to the public.
