DWEEZIL ZAPPED: Several months ago, guitarist and part-time MTV veejay Dweezil Zappa introduced a Crowded House video in his typically sardonic way, muttering something about how the New Zealand-based pop group was “another John Lennon rip-off band.” Since then, Crowded House went on to have hit singles with the likes of “Don’t Dream It’s Over,” and at the MTV Video Awards ceremony a week ago the band won the award for best new video artist.

All of the MTV jocks served as the evening’s hosts and commentators--and when the award was presented to Crowded House, the band members found themselves standing directly behind none other than Dweezil Zappa. The band knew about Zappa’s less-than-glowing introduction, so when the cameras were off, Crowded House songwriter Neil Finn turned to the veejay and reportedly said, “Not bad for a John Lennon rip-off, eh, Dweezil?” Dweez said he’d only been kidding.
