Race car driver Roberto Guerrero, critically injured in a crash at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway two weeks ago, is beginning to regain consciousness and was moved to a private room at Indianapolis Methodist Hospital.

The condition of the 28-year-old Colombian has been upgraded from serious to good, although he is still considered to be in a coma. Guerrero was in the hospital’s critical care unit since the Sept. 10 crash.

Although Guerrero’s improvement has been steady, his neurosurgeon said it could be two to three years before the driver fully recovers from his head injuries.

As for Guerrero’s chances of resuming his career, Dr. Michael Turner said, “It’s one thing to walk and talk and hold down a desk job, and it’s another to drive a race car at 200 m.p.h.”

Guerrero, who crashed while testing tires, finished second in this year’s Indianapolis 500 and also scored his first two Indy car victories this year.
