The Southern California Rapid Transit District board agreed to renew a controversial $2.1-million-per-year lease for its downtown headquarters offices. The district has been criticized for spending more than $20 million on rent and improvements at the Main Street building when it apparently could have purchased the building for much less money eight years ago. The district for years has been considering building or buying new headquarters away from the current Skid Row location, but General Manager John Dyer said that until then, renewal of the lease is the best alternative.
