Roundup : A Versatile Jones Leads Vista Over Morse, 31-18

Marc Jones, one of the top running backs in the county, showed he was valuable in other ways Friday night as No. 3-ranked Vista High School defeated No. 4-ranked Morse, 31-18, in a nonleague game.

Jones scored on an 11-yard pass from Bill Faraimo early in the first quarter to give Vista a 7-0 lead. Then, later in the quarter, he returned a punt 49 yards for a touchdown to give the Panthers a 14-0 lead.

Morse came back in the second quarter as Mike Lira threw touchdown passes of 20 and 70 yards to Joe Welch. Jon Christansen kicked a 22-yard field goal to give Vista 17-12 halftime lead.

In the second half, Vista turned to its running attack to put the game away. David Strojny scored on a two-yard run in the third quarter and Faraimo scored on a five-yard run in the fourth quarter as Vista took a 31-12 lead.

In other games, all nonleague:

Sweetwater 49, Kearny 6--Pierre Jones rushed for 121 yards in 20 carries, including four touchdowns, to pace host Sweetwater. Jones scored on runs of 35, 32, 20 and 2 yards. Sophomore fullback Tana Lepule scored on a 35-yard run and reserve running back Jaime Romero scored on a 46-yard run for Sweetwater (3-0). Tom Rawlins scored Kearny’s only touchdown in the fourth period on a one-yard run. Kearny is 0-3.

Point Loma 30, Hoover 8--Kelby Downey rushed for 174 yards and two touchdowns in 24 carries to lead the Pointers (3-0) at Mesa College. Downey scored on a 23-yard run in the second quarter to put Point Loma ahead, 7-0. The Pointers went ahead 10-0 with 18 seconds left in the first half when T.J. Linardi kicked a 38-yard field goal. Downey scored again on a three-yard run early in the third quarter. After Jermaine Odom scored from the three for Hoover, Ron Evans’ 56-yard touchdown run closed the scoring for Point Loma. The Pointers had 367 yards total offense and held Hoover (0-3) to 106 yards.

Lincoln 34, University City 13--Darrin Wagner victimized his old team with 195 yards rushing in 20 carries. Wagner, who averaged nearly 100 yards in five games for University City last year before transfering to Lincoln, scored Lincoln’s first touchdown on a 59-yard run with 9:06 left in the first quarter. Wagner’s run came two plays after UC, on its first play, scored on a touchdown pass of 74 yards from Todd Fisher to Greg Wilson. UC threatened to take a 14-7 lead but Derrick Mitchell made a one-handed interception of a pass from Anthony Hill at the goal line. Lincoln (2-1) drove 98 yards on 15 plays for a 14-7 lead as Freddie Stokes scored on a 1-yard run. Lincoln upped its lead to 34-7 before UC (1-2) scored again.

Crawford 27, Serra 0--Crawford’s defense dominated, sacking Serra quarterback Chris Robinson five times and giving up 34 yards in total offense. Crawford (2-1) opened the scoring late in the first quarter when running back Jaime Williams capped an 87-yard drive with his 1-yard run. Crawford increased its lead in the second quarter on a 42-yard scoring pass to James Gordon from quarterback Keith Gilbert, who completed 11 of 19 passes for 155 yards. Crawford’s Keith Williams had 125 yards in 13 carries. Serra is 1-2.

Mission Bay 35, Marian 3--Chris Fernandez scored three touchdowns and Brian Miranda ran for one and passed for another to lead visiting Mission Bay (1-2-0). Fernandez scored on runs of 2, 45 and 20 yards. Miranda threw a 35-yard scoring pass to Jason Surdy and ran 17 yards for another score. Marian is 1-2.

Orange Glen 22, San Pasqual 6--Sean Gousha threw for two touchdowns and ran for another to lead host Orange Glen (1-1-1). Both touchdown passes were to wide receiver Jake Nyberg. Nyberg scored on a 15-yard pass play in the second period and on a 28-yarder in the fourth period. Later in the fourth period, Gousha scored on a 1-yard run. San Pasqual is 0-3.

Castle Park 0, Southwest 0--The last scoreless tie in San Diego County was in 1984, when St. Augustine and Christian were deadlocked. Castle Park (0-0-2) could have won on Kiyoshi Moody’s 24-yard scoring run in the second quarter, but it was called back because of a holding penalty. Southwest is 1-1-1.

Chula Vista 24, Patrick Henry 6--Marquis Howard rushed for 286 yards and two touchdowns in 21 carries to lead the host Spartans (1-0-2). Howard scored on runs of 34 and 1 yards. After Patrick Henry scored on a 44-yard field goal by Andy Trakas in the first quarter, Chula Vista took the lead for good on quarterback Paul Geering’s 28-yard touchdown pass to Shawn Miranda. Geering was 11 for 14 for 124 yards. Miranda made four catches for 44 yards. The Patriots are 0-3.

San Marcos 7, Poway 7--Mike Beam threw an 8-yard touchdown pass to Brad Herzog with 9:43 remaining in the fourth quarter to give host Poway (2-0-1) a tie. San Marcos (0-1-2) had taken a 7-0 lead in the first quarter on a two-yard run by Jesse Berrelleza. Poway moved the ball to the San Marcos 33-yard-line late in the fourth quarter, but time ran out before the Titans could get set up for a possible game-winning field goal.

USDHS 41, Mar Vista 8--Duke Gonzalez returned a fumble 40 yards for a touchdown and also scored on a 1-yard run in the first quarter to give USDHS a 13-0 lead and the Dons (3-0-0) went on to defeat visiting Mar Vista (2-1-0). USDHS’s Brian Duplesis rushed for 108 yards on 7 carries, including a 60-yard touchdown run, and Anthony Nassa completed 8 of 12 passes for 110 yards and two touchdowns.

Bonita Vista 10, Hilltop 7--Joe Lane kicked a 28-yard field goal with just over one minute remaining to give Bonita Vista (1-2-0) the win over visiting Hilltop (0-3-0). Hilltop took a 7-0 lead in the first quarter on a 77-yard scoring pass from Chad Boyd to John Barone. Bonita Vista tied the game in the third quarter when Mike Terry picked up a fumble and returned it 28 yards for a score.

Coronado 13, St. Augustine 12--Doug Carter threw incomplete on a two-point conversion pass attempt with 19 seconds remaining and Coronado (3-0-0) held on to beat visiting St. Augustine (2-1-0). Coronado took a 13-6 lead on Matt Rutter’s 30-yard interception return midway through the fourth quarter. St. Augustine pulled to within one point (13-12) when Carter scored on a one-yard touchdown run.

Kofa 56, San Diego 0--Brian Blanding rushed for three touchdowns and caught a pass for another to lead the visiting team from Arizona. Blanding scored twice from 8 yards out and once on a 10-yard run. Jeff Stievers threw a four-yard pass to Blanding for the other touchdown. Derryl House ran 51 yards for a touchdown late in the game for Kofa. The Cavers are 0-3.

El Capitan 28, Granite Hills 17--Andy Johns’ 75-yard run for a touchdown early in the fourth quarter gave El Capitan the lead for good at Valley Stadium. Granite Hills (1-2) took a 14-0 halftime lead, but lost fumbles in its own territory early in the second half resulted in two El Capitan (3-0) touchdowns. Granite Hills took a 17-14 lead on a 42-yard field goal by Jon Rice on the first play of the final quarter. El Capitan took the lead for good on Johns’ run and added an insurance score on Bryan Palmer’s 19-yard-run for a touchdown with five minutes left. Brian Giles, who scored Granite Hills’ first touchdown on a 1-yard run, had 181 yards rushing in 28 carries. Johns and Palmer eached scored twice for El Capitan.

Ramona 7, Mt. Empire 6--Jason Waite missed his first two extra point attempts, but was given a third opportunity to give host Ramona (1-2) the victory. In the third quarter, Ramona took possession on the Mt. Empire 20-yard line after a bad snap. Four plays later, Mike Allen scored on a two-yard run. Waite missed his first kick, but Mt. Empire was penalized for being off-sides. On the next attempt, Waite missed again but Mt. Empire had 12 players on the field.

El Camino 23, Fallbrook 14--El Camino (1-2) upset the host Warriors (2-1). Fallbrook was playing without starting quarterback Mike Turiace, who suffered a broken jaw last week against San Marcos. Replacement Jeff Pack, Coach Tom Pack’s son, threw two touchdown passes.

La Jolla 37, Escondido 13--Jerry Walker gained 98 yards in five carries, including a 75-yard touchdown run on a sweep in the second quarter, to pace La Jolla (2-1) at Escondido. Brent Woodall rushed for 92 yards and 2 touchdowns in 12 carries. Escondido is 0-3.
