Roundup : Santa Monica Rallies to Beat Palisades, 48-42

Santa Monica High School, led by tailback Glyn Milburn, rallied twice Friday night to defeat Palisades, 48-42, in a nonleague game before a crowd of 5,500 at Santa Monica College.

The Vikings (2-0) trailed, 30-13, at halftime but scored 21 straight points in a nine-minute span in the third quarter to take a brief 34-30 lead. Palisades (0-1) scored to make it 36-34 before Santa Monica came back with two touchdowns to take the lead for good.

Milburn followed up last week’s 241-yard, 3-touchdown performance against St. Paul by rushing for 162 yards and 5 touchdowns in 38 carries. Quarterback Steve Macko completed all 7 of his passes for 49 yards and 2 touchdowns.

Palisades quarterback Perry Klein completed 25 of 44 attempts for 227 yards and 5 touchdowns.

City San Fernando 24, Manual Arts 6--Quarterback Joe Mauldin threw touchdown passes of 9 yards to Danny Leos and 13 yards to Tommy Howard, and ran 9 yards for a third touchdown at Manual Arts in the nonleague opener for both teams. San Fernando scored on its first offensive series on a 3-yard run by Eric Lee. Manual Arts tied the game in the second quarter on Kevin Bowden’s 14-yard run. Mauldin completed 12 of 22 passes for 161 yards and was the game’s leading rusher with 47 yards in 15 carries. Bowden completed 4 of 15 passes for 43 yards and was intercepted twice.

Alemany 17, Granada Hills 14--With 1:14 remaining in the game, Chris Lobos kicked a 31-yard field goal to give the Indians (2-0-1) a nonleague win against the Highlanders (0-1), The Times’ No. 3 ranked City team, at Alemany. Sophomore quarterback Joey Rosselli, who entered the game in the second quarter and led a 87-yard touchdown drive, completed 11 of 16 passes for 159 yards and 1 touchdown to lead the Alemany offense. Mark Scott had 8 receptions for 103 yards. Ray Campuzano gained 105 yards in 19 carries for the Indians. Granada Hills quarterback Jason Leach completed 26 of 31 passes for 271 yards and 1 touchdown. Jamal Farmer scored the second Granada Hills touchdown on a 69-yard run.

Gardena 27, San Pedro 6--Senior running back Derrick Duren rushed for 109 yards and 1 touchdown in 11 carries to lead a Gardena ground attack that totaled 298 yards in a nonleague victory at San Pedro. Khybdeeb Hairston carried 13 times for 89 yards and a touchdown, and Vincent Murray carried 12 times for 56 yards and a touchdown for No. 6-ranked Gardena, which held San Pedro to 69 yards rushing and 88 yards passing.

Carson 28, Lynwood 0--Quarterback George Malauulu completed 11 of 17 yards for 284 yards, including a school record-tying 94-yard touchdown pass play to wide receiver Brian Treggs as the Colts, top-ranked in The Times’ City poll, routed the Knights in a nonleague game at Lynwood. Carson dominated both sides of the line, compiling 404 yards on offense while holding Lynwood to 9 yards rushing and 12 yards passing. The Carson defense sacked Lynwood’s Charles Levy 9 times--including 4 by senior linebacker Arnold Ale--and dropped Lynwood running backs 6 times for losses. Ale and senior linebacker Arthur Warren each had 13 tackles.

Southern Section Crespi 55, Santa Barbara 0--Junior tailback Russell White set a school single-game rushing record of 266 yards in 16 carries, and fullback J.J. Laskey added 153 yards in 7 carries as Crespi (2-0-1) rolled up 636 yards in total offense in a nonleague game at Crespi. White opened the game with a 96-yard touchdown and later added scoring runs of 57 and 1 yards. White has gained 507 yards in 51 attempts. Laskey had touchdown runs of 59, 1 and 61 yards the first three times he carried the ball. Santa Barbara (2-1) was limited to 154 yards total offense. Junior Ron Redell, who completed 7 of 8 passes for 94 yards and 1 touchdown, alternated with starting quarterback Rob O’Byrne, who completed 4 of 5 passes for 65 yards. Junior Eric Kieling had 8 catches for 130 yards and 1 touchdown.

Fontana 26, St. Paul 7--Derrick Malone rushed for 117 yards and 2 touchdowns in 22 carries to lead the Steelers (3-0), The Times’ No. 1-ranked Southern Section team, to a nonleague victory before 7,000 fans at St. Paul. Fontana’s Kevin Snyder had three interceptions, including two in the final 2:17 to set up a pair of Fontana touchdowns. St. Paul (0-3), off to the worst start in school history, was led by Anthony Munoz, who rushed for 76 yards in 13 carries.

Bishop Amat 21, Long Beach Poly 0--Running back Mazio Royster rushed 30 times for 164 yards and a two-point conversion to lead the Lancers to a 21-0 nonleague win over the visiting Jackrabbits. Royster was complemented by quarterback J.R. Phillips, who rushed for two touchdowns and threw for another. Phillips, a senior, completed 6 of 16 passes for 158 yards, including a 47-yard touchdown play to junior wide receiver Wade Kennedy, and scored on two 1-yard runs. Bishop Amat, The Times’ No. 4-ranked Southern Section team, amassed 356 yards while holding Poly (0-2) to 158 yards.

South Hills 16, Baldwin Park 8--Leading 3-0 at halftime, the Huskies (3-0) scored two touchdowns in the second half to defeat the Braves (2-1) in a nonleague game at Baldwin Park. Quarterback Jason Giambi scored on a one-yard touchdown late in the third quarter to give South Hills a 10-0 lead. In the fourth quarter, Jerry Wolak tallied on a one-yard run with 6:21 remaining to clinch the win. Baldwin Park scored a late touchdown but never threatened. Both Husky touchdowns were set up by fumble recoveries. South Hills limited Baldwin Park to 139 total yards, including minus 13 yards rushing. South Hills had 4 sacks for 30 yards.

Claremont 19, Bell Gardens 13--The Wolfpack (3-0) rallied from a 13-6 fourth-quarter deficit to defeat the Lancers (2-1) in a nonleague game before 6,000 at Bell Gardens. Claremont quarterback Baraka Harper completed 7 of 12 attempts for 143 yards and 3 touchdowns, including a 65-yard scoring pass to Ken Allen. David Manquerors rushed for 80 yards and 2 touchdowns in 13 carries for Bell Gardens.

San Marino 33, Saugus 22--The Titans (2-0) took a 20-0 lead and held on to beat the Centurions (2-1) in a nonleague game at San Marino. San Marino quarterback Rob Norberg completed 16 of 29 passes for 181 yards and 3 touchdowns. The Titans’ Rich Adams rushed for two touchdowns and scored another on a 35-yard reception. Lemark Allen had a 51-yard touchdown run for Saugus.

Thousand Oaks 13, Canyon Country Canyon 10--Marc Monestime ran for 123 yards and 1 touchdown in 23 carries to lead the Lancers (3-0) to their first win over the Cowboys (1-2) in 9 years. Last year, Thousand Oaks’ only two losses were to Canyon. Thousand Oaks scored the winning touchdown on a six-yard run by Steve Sisco with five minutes remaining. After Canyon had a drive stopped at its 40, Thousand Oaks ran out the clock in the nonleague game at Thousand Oaks.

Antelope Valley 34, Redlands 21--Quarterback Ron Whipple completed 12 of 26 for 134 yards and 3 touchdowns, and Byron Russell added 92 yards in 16 carries as Antelope Valley improved to 3-0 in a nonleague game at Antelope Valley. Tommy Smith had 5 receptions for 88 yards and touchdowns of 26 and 7 yards. Shawn Grime had 6 receptions for 67 yards and 1 touchdown. Redlands, which tied Crespi to open the season, is 1-1-1.

Mission Viejo 17, Fountain Valley 10--Troy Kopp, a 6-foot, 2-inch junior quarterback, completed 11 of 19 passes for 208 yards as the Diablos improved to 3-0. Fountain Valley (0-3) quarterback David Henigan completed 20 of 28 passes for 203 yards.

Sunny Hills 35, Cypress 10--Quarterback David Chisum completed 14 of 17 passes for 247 yards and 3 touchdowns for Sunny Hills (3-0) in a nonleague game at Buena Park High. Cypress (0-3) broke Sunny Hills’ scoreless string at 10 quarters when Paul Geldbach scored on a 13-yard pass from Chris Dangaren.
