Winds Clear Away Smoke but Fan Month-Old Blazes
Gusty winds Saturday helped dissipate choking layers of smoke from month-old fires in Northern California, but at the same time fanned the flames that continued to burn on huge chunks of the Klamath National Forest.
The fires at Klamath have burned 224,000 acres in the last four weeks, fire information officer Jo Ellen Keil said. “We’re expecting 20 m.p.h.-plus winds out of the north, but there’s still no sign of rain,” Keil said.
The fires at Klamath were from 20% to 90% controlled, and more than 6,300 firefighters remained on the lines.
Slightly to the south, three complexes of fires continued to burn on more than 75,000 acres in the Shasta-Trinity National Forest. The weather there was “gorgeous,” said fire information officer Terry Virgin, but a return to dry, hot weather was expected Sunday.
