Eighth-seeded Martin Jaite of Argentina upset top-seeded Mats Wilander of Sweden, 7-6, 6-4, 4-6, 0-6, 6-4, Sunday to win the 35th Count of Godo tennis tournament at the Royal Tennis Club in Barcelona, Spain.

A crowd of 5,000 watched the match, which lasted 4 hours 12 minutes.

Jaite, 22, earned $39,440 for his victory in the weeklong tournament. The 23-year-old Wilander collected $19,720.

It was the first time Jaite had won in seven meetings with Wilander.

After losing the first two sets, Wilander got back on track in the next two, winning 6-4 and 6-0. But Jaite, urged by the crowd in the last set, found the strength to fight back to take the set and match, 6-4.

The victory was Jaite’s first in the $300,000 tournament, which counts toward the Nabisco Grand Prix.

Steffi Graf of West Germany won her ninth tournament of the year, defeating compatriot Isabel Cueto, 6-2, 6-2, in the final of a $150,000 Grand Prix tournament at Hamburg, West Germany.

The world’s No. 1 female player did not lose a set in the tournament, the first major women’s event in Hamburg in several years. However, few top players participated and only 4,000 tickets were sold.

Graf won $30,000 and Cueto, 19, the No. 5 West German women’s player, received $13,500.
