P. V. Peninsula : School Closure Debates
The first of a series of public hearings on a proposed school consolidation attracted an estimated 750 people to the Palos Verdes High School gym Tuesday night. Most of the 26 speakers appeared to favor closing a high school to cut costs in the under-enrolled Palos Ve1919182195enrollment.
The speakers generally opposed the idea of abandoning middle schools and setting up seventh-through-12th-grade high schools. If Miraleste High is closed, some said, the campus should be converted to a middle school. In ranging over the options, some speakers urged the board not to close any more elementary schools until enrollment trends at that level are better determined.
The second hearing will be at 7 p.m. Wednesday in the Miraleste gym and the third is set for 7 p.m. Oct. 12, in the Rolling Hills High School gym. The board is expected to decide on a consolidation plan at its Nov. 2 meeting.
