San Clemente : City Nuclear Emergency Response Effort Praised
The Federal Emergency Management Agency has awarded the city an “exemplary performance” rating for its nuclear emergency preparedness program.
The agency had monitored a daylong nuclear emergency simulation within a 10-mile radius of the San Onofre Nuclear Generating Station, located about five miles south of San Clemente.
Under federal requirements, nuclear power stations must simulate a nuclear emergency that would require a 10-square-mile evacuation.
Agency officials commended San Clemente for its ability to coordinate evacuations with local schools and other city and county agencies.
