Golf Roundup : Mahaffey Putts Way Into Lead

John Mahaffey sank long birdie putts on his last two holes to shoot a five-under-par 66 and take the first-round lead Thursday in the $300,000 Pensacola Open golf tournament at Pensacola, Fla.

The 16-year PGA Tour veteran had seven birdies and finished with putts of 30 and 20 feet to take a one-shot edge over Bobby Cole, Jeff Sluman, Phil Blackmar, Danny Edwards and Trevor Dodds on the 7,154-yard course at the Perdido Bay Resort.

In addition to his two long-distance birdies on the eighth and ninth holes, his last two, Mahaffey had putts of about 30 feet each to birdie the fourth and 13th holes.

Favored Bernhard Langer of West Germany shot a four-under-par 68 to take a two-stroke lead in the first round of the $444,000 German Masters tournament at Stuttgart.

Ireland’s Christy O’Conner and Britain’s Tony Charnley shot 70s.
