Quarterback Bill Marler threw for two touchdowns and ran for another to lead Golden West College to a 43-14 victory over Pasadena City College Saturday in the teams’ South Coast Conference opener in front of 700 at LeBard Stadium.

The Rustlers (1-0 in conference, 2-2 overall) lost Blaise Bryant in the second quarter. The freshman running back suffered a slight sprained ankle and watched the second half of the game from the sidelines on crutches.

Bryant, who rushed for 207 yards in Golden West’s 34-6 win over Ventura two weeks ago, was injured at the end of a 56-yard run, which set up the Rustlers’ second touchdown in the second quarter.

Two plays after Bryant’s run, Marler threw a 36-yard touchdown pass to wide receiver Willie Taylor to give the Rustlers a 13-8 lead. Golden West never trailed again.

Marler completed 13 of 23 passes for 172 yards. Taylor had 6 receptions for 118 yards and 2 touchdowns.

Even without Bryant, who gained 96 yards, the Rustlers ran the ball effectively. Tony Garrett, who alternated between fullback and tailback, gained 96 yards in 21 attempts and scored a touchdown. Reserve tailback tailback Corey Dickson added 52 yards in 7 carries, as Golden West amassed 263 yards on the ground.

Pasadena (0-1, 3-1) also moved the ball well on the ground, but quarterback Dana Frelow was just 4 of 21 and was intercepted 5 times.

Running back Anthony Wallace was the Lancers’ main offensive threat with 145 yards rushing. His 87-yard touchdown run in the third quarter cut the Rustlers’ lead to 16-14.

However, Golden West quickly regained control of the game by driving 65 yards in 4 plays on its next possession. Marler’s 18-yard touchdown pass to Taylor made it 22-14 with 7:41 left in the third quarter.

Fullerton 16, Long Beach 9--Craig Ross kicked field goals of 43, 35 and 39 yards to lead the Hornets in the conference opener in Veterans Stadium at Long Beach.

Quarterback Vic Williams completed 11 of 17 passes for 136 yards for Fullerton (2-2, 1-0). Kerry Severson scored the Hornets’ only touchdown on a 39-yard run in the third quarter. The run gave Fullerton the lead for good, 13-9.
