COLLEGE FOOTBALL : Pacific 10 Roundup : Washington Shuts Down Arizona State in Fourth Quarter to Win, 27-14

Washington Coach Don James had doubted that his huskies could beat 13th-ranked Arizona State.

“After what they did to us two years down in the desert and how well they played against Nebraska, we were afraid,” James said.

But the Huskies beat the Sun Devils, 27-14, Saturday in a Pacific 10 game at Seattle by dominating the fourth quarter.

Arizona State, the defending Rose Bowl champion, trailed, 17-0, at halftime but cut that deficit to 17-14 with two third-quarter touchdown passes from Daniel Ford to Chris Garrett.

Tony Covington scored on a 1-yard run and Brandy Brownlee kicked a 36-yard field goal for Washington in the fourth quarter to spoil Arizona State’s Pac-10 opener.

Ford was sacked 7 times for 50 yards.

“We were fortunate to only be down 17-0 at the end of the first half,” Arizona State Coach John Cooper said. “Then we came out and made a ballgame out of it.”

Arizona State entered the game with three victories and a 35-28 loss to second-ranked Nebraska this season. The Sun Devils beat the Huskies, 36-7, in 1985 and, 34-21, in 1986, both in Tempe, Ariz.

Washington, coming off a 29-22 loss at Oregon, is 4-2 overall and 2-1 in the Pac-10.

A Husky Stadium crowd of 73,883 watched Washington hold Arizona State to eight yards in the fourth quarter. Overall, the Huskies rolled up 372 total yards to 131 for the Sun Devils.

Washington quarterback Chris Chandler, sticking mainly to short passes, completed 16 of 22 for 147 yards with 1 interception.

Washington’s defense, led by linebacker Bo Yates’ two interceptions and a sack, held the Sun Devils to 14 rushing yards.

Stanford 44, Washington St. 7--Jon Volpe, a red-shirt freshman, caught a long pass for Stanford’s first touchdown and then ran for two more scores as the Cardinal snapped a four-game losing streak by hammering the Cougars at Pullman, Wash.

Volpe set the tone when he and quarterback Brian Johnson, a red-shirt freshman making his first college start, beat a blitz for a 65-yard scoring pass play to give the Cardinal a 7-0 lead at 9:04 in the first quarter.

Volpe also scored on runs of five and nine yards as Stanford led, 41-7, at halftime.

Volpe gained 105 yards in 26 carries as the Cardinal, coached by Washington State alumnus Jack Elway, improved to 1-4 overall and 1-2 in the Pac-10. Washington State fell to 2-3 and 0-1.

Alan Grant scored on a 77-yard punt return for Stanford, the third-longest in school history, in the second quarter.

Johnson, who also threw a 26-yard touchdown pass to tight end Jim Price in the second quarter, got the start after Stanford lost to UCLA, 49-0, the previous Saturday. He completed 12 of 23 passes for 278 yards.

Arizona 23, California 23--Arizona quarterback Jeff Hammershmidt fumbled on California’s 21-yard line with 42 seconds left to kill a Wildcat drive and enable the Golden Bears to preserve a tie at Berkeley.

Arizona (2-2-1, 0-1-1) took a 23-16 lead after cornerback Durrell Jones intercepted a Troy Taylor pass at the start of the fourth quarter and, 13 plays later, Ronald Veal scored from the five-yard line.

California (0-4-1, 0-1-1) scored the tying touchdown with 3:36 remaining on a five-yard pass from Taylor to slotback Rob Bimson.

Oregon St. 42, Akron 26--Erik Wilhelm threw five touchdown passes, including four to Robb Thomas, to lead the Beavers to a nonconference victory over the Zips at Corvallis, Ore.

Wilhelm completed 27 of 44, passes for 461 yards as the Beavers rolled up 596 yards total offense.

Thomas, son of former NFL wide receiver Aaron Thomas, caught 9 passes for 231 yards.

The Beavers improved to 2-3 and the Zips fell to 2-4.
