Saucy Lil has never made it to the winner’s circle in seven starts, and the thoroughbred almost made her last start in a three-mile run at East Rutherford, N.J..

The great race began about 8:30 a.m. when Saucy Lil took to the Meadowlands race track for a workout with apprentice rider Anthony Anderson in the saddle.

About halfway through the workout, a stirrup on the saddle broke and Anderson fell off.

Saucy Lil took off, ran through an open gate and headed onto the stable grounds, where she slipped and fell but got to her feet to take off again.

The 2-year-old filly ran through a chain-link fence and ran out onto Paterson Plank Road, heading the wrong way.

The chase almost came to an end at a railroad crossing when Saucy Lil tried to hurdle a down railroad gate as a train was passing. However, the leap failed and the thoroughbred continued on after getting up off of the ground.

The chase eventually ended at a police roadblock in a gas station.

Dr. Keith Evingham, a track veterinarian, gave Saucy Lil a sedative and she was taken to the hospital at the track where she was treated for cuts and bruises.
