Alex H. Zimmerman Dies; Was Educator, Musician

Services for Alex H. Zimmerman of San Diego, a founding member of the Idyllwild School of Music and the Arts, will be held at noon Friday at the Chapel of the Roses, Glen Abbey Mortuary, Bonita. Zimmerman died Saturday in a hospital. He was 83.

A native of Alton, Ill., Zimmerman came to San Diego 45 years ago. From 1947 to 1963, he was director of music education for San Diego city schools.

Zimmerman, who spent 60 years in education, was a board member of the Music Educators National Conference for 24 years and was its president in 1963 and 1964.

He was a member and past president of the San Diego Retired Teachers Assn. as well as an honorary life member of the American Guild of Organists.

He published several books and articles on music education, composed music and was a choir director of his church.

Survivors include his wife, Marian; two sons, Gilbert of Rancho Mirage and Alex of Albuquerque, N.M., and six grandchildren.
