Local News in Brief : Shopping Area Reopens

Share

Most of the earthquake-ravaged Uptown Whittier shopping district was reopened to pedestrians Wednesday after city officials fenced off 20 to 30 dangerous buildings. The streets remain closed to vehicles while demolition work continues on 14 buildings.

City Manager Thomas G. Mauk said the Uptown area will be reopened in phases in hopes of avoiding a repeat of the gridlock caused by sightseers on Greenleaf Avenue after the Oct. 1 quake. The district was closed after the 5.5 aftershock Oct. 4.
