A record 75 countries will participate in 1988 Davis Cup play, and more zones were created Wednesday in a change of format.

Three nations--Ghana, Cameroon and Haiti--will be playing for the first time. Saudi Arabia, which missed 1987 play, will return.

The United States, in the unusual position of having to qualify to get back into the world group after having been beaten by Paraguay in this year’s competition, has a first-round bye and will begin its campaign in the second round against either Chile or Peru.
