Mendez’s 14 Aces Sets SDSU Record

Jackie Mendez set a school record with 14 aces Friday night to lead San Diego State to a 15-4, 12-15, 13-15, 15-8, 15-8 victory over 11th-ranked Cal State Long Beach in a Pacific Coast Athletic Assn. women’s volleyball match at Peterson Gym.

Mendez broke the record held by Mary Holland, who had 10 aces in a match in 1980. San Diego State improved to 9-10 overall and 4-5 in conference play. Cal State Long Beach fell to 19-4, 4-4.

Angelica Jackson had 35 kills to lead San Diego State. Tara Cross had 30 kills to lead the 49ers.

UC San Diego 3, UC Santa Cruz 0--Janet Hughes, Diana Klintworth and Dee Dee Bigelow each had five kills as UCSD, the No. 1-ranked NCAA Division III team, won for the 10th straight time this season, beating host Santa Cruz, 15-0, 15-10, 15-4. UCSD is 18-2.
