COLLEGE FOOTBALL : Pacific 10 Roundup : Muster Helps Stanford Win, 13-10

Brad Muster, playing for the first time in four weeks, ran three yards for a touchdown with 39 seconds remaining Saturday to give Stanford a 13-10 Pacific 10 victory over Oregon at Stanford.

Oregon moved 41 yards to the Stanford 21 in the closing seconds and gambled on a third-down pass, rather than attempting a field goal. With seven seconds left, quarterback Bill Musgrave aimed for Terry Obee in the end zone, and time ran out as the ball was batted down by a Stanford defender.

Stanford, which trailed, 10-0, at halftime, got a safety and a field goal in the third quarter and drove 68 yards for the fourth-quarter touchdown that gave the team its third consecutive victory.

Brian Johnson, the Cardinal quarterback, ran for a two-point conversion after Muster’s touchdown run over left tackle made the score 11-10.

Stanford, 3-4 overall, evened its conference record at 2-2. Oregon fell to 4-3 and 2-2.

Muster, the senior tailback who was Pac-10 Offensive Player of the Year last season, has been out most of this season because of an ankle injury. He returned in the second half of Saturday’s game and totaled 43 yards in 10 rushing plays.

Oregon scored in the final four minutes of the first half on a 30-yard field goal by Kirk Dennis and a 7-yard touchdown pass from Musgrave to Tony Hargain. A 22-yard punt return by Obee and a 15-yard interception return by Tom Talbot set up the touchdown.

Arizona State 30, Oregon State 21--Tailback Darryl Harris rushed for 190 yards and fullback Channing Williams added 147 yards as the Sun Devils rallied to beat the Beavers at Corvallis, Ore.

The Beavers led, 21-17, at halftime on three second-quarter touchdown passes by Erik Wilhelm, who completed 11 of 12 during the outburst and 31 of 49 for 339 yards in the game.

Arizona State, 5-2 overall and 2-1 in the conference, scored two fourth-quarter touchdowns under the direction of seldom-used quarterback John Walker to turn back the upset-minded Beavers (2-5 and 0-3), who lost to Arizona State for the 10th straight time.

The defending Pac-10 champion Sun Devils, who play host to UCLA next Saturday, sliced the Beaver lead to 21-19 with 2:02 left in the third quarter when Wilhelm, in the clutches of ASU’s Trace Armstrong, was called for a safety for intentionally grounding the ball in the end zone.

After the Beavers’ free kick, Arizona State went 54 yards in 12 plays for the go-ahead score. Walker, a junior who replaced starter Dan Ford in the third quarter, scored on a two-yard sweep, then hit Kirk Wendorf with a two-point conversion pass to put the Sun Devils ahead, 27-21.

Washington St. 45, Arizona 28--Steve Broussard scored three times and Timm Rosenbach regained his passing touch as the Cougars (3-4 and 1-2) snapped a four-game losing streak by beating the Wildcats (3-3-1 and 1-2-1) at Pullman, Wash.

Broussard scored on a 42-yard pass play and two short runs. Rosenbach, intercepted four times and held to just 73 yards passing in a loss to Arizona State a week earlier, completed 25 of 31 passes for 324 yards and no interceptions.
