Fire Does $80,000 in Damage to Mortuary
An attic fire, possibly sparked by an electrical short, caused an estimated $80,000 in damage to a Covina mortuary, officials said.
The fire broke out at the Custer Christiansen Mortuary at about 1:30 p.m. Monday, Covina Fire Chief Carl Johnson said.
The blaze was confined to the attic and extinguished within a few minutes, but smoke damaged other parts of the building.
“There was smoke damage to the main chapel and viewing room,” Johnson said.
Covina Police Officer Scott Faagy said the fire’s cause was under investigation but added arson was not considered likely.
