Shutout Not Enough for a Glendale Win

Despite its shutout of Arcadia last Thursday night, Glendale High remains winless; the best Glendale could do was produce a rain-drenched 0-0 tie.

What did Glendale Co-Coach Tim Butler think of the teams’ pour performance?

“They were an option team and we primarily throw the ball,” Butler said. “It made things difficult for everyone.”

Glendale quarterback Rick Callister completed 7 of 19 passes for 88 yards while Arcadia managed only 30 yards passing. The teams rushed for a combined 100 net yards.

Arcadia drove to the Glendale two-yard line in the fourth quarter but was held by the Dynamiters, who blocked the ensuing field-goal attempt.

Tough competition: Coach Terry Terrazone believes that--when the season is over--few people will remember the caliber of opponent faced by his St. Francis team. And he finds that a little disheartening.

“We have played better than our record shows,” Terrazone said. “But all people want to know is how many games you’ve won.”

St. Francis (1-6) had a tough outing Friday night at St. John Bosco, losing on a 32-yard field goal with 26 seconds left, 24-21.

St. Francis also has lost to Big Five Conference teams Crespi (ranked No. 2) and Bishop Amat (No. 3), in addition to St. John Bosco (No. 7). Add to that list Muir (No. 5 in the Coastal Conference), Burroughs of Burbank (No. 4 in the Northwestern Conference) and Damien.

“Besides Crespi and Damien, we have played everybody tough and had a good chance to win every game,” Terrazone said. “But in the tough ballgames we have made some mental errors.”

In the running: It appears that the City Section 2-A Northern League title will be won by a Glendale-area team this season. Eagle Rock, Marshall and Verdugo Hills all had opening week wins in the six-team league. Verdugo Hills (2-3, 1-0), which two weeks ago upset Van Nuys, 28-27, and defeated Belmont, 15-8, Friday night, is favored for the league title. Marshall (1-4, 1-0) defeated Hollywood, 22-6, and Eagle Rock (2-3, 1-0) beat Lincoln, 17-4.

Games to watch: Eagle Rock plays Verdugo Hills on Thursday at Poly High at 8 p.m.

On Friday at 7:30 p.m., St. Francis plays host to Notre Dame, Crescenta Valley plays Hoover at Glendale High, La Canada plays at South Pasadena and Glendale plays Pasadena at Pasadena City College. Also on Friday, Marshall plays Belmont at L. A. City College at 8 p.m.

On Saturday, Pater Noster plays host to Cathedral at 1:45 p.m. and Franklin plays at Wilson at 8 p.m.

In college games Saturday, Occidental College plays host to Claremont at 7:30 p.m. and Glendale College plays Moorpark at Glendale High at 1:30 p.m.
