The State : 1,046 Arrested at Celebration
Santa Barbara County sheriff’s deputies said 1,046 people were arrested at a giant, two-day Halloween celebration in Isla Vista, just west of the University of California, Santa Barbara, campus. Of those arrested, authorities said, most were cited for minor offenses. But 215 were booked into county jail and 10 into juvenile hall, mostly for alcohol-related offenses. “The majority of those arrested were from out of town, some from as far east as Maine,” Deputy Ugo Arnoldi said, estimating that 40,000 people attended the massive weekend celebration. “The rain didn’t slow them (the partygoers) down.” Many of the visitors, Arnoldi said, apparently were drawn by articles in Playboy magazine and other publications citing the popularity of the Isla Vista Halloween celebration. Two officers were injured--neither seriously--trying to police the four-square-mile party zone, Arnoldi said.
