The 10th game of the world championship chess match between Gary Kasparov and Anatoly Karpov ended in a draw Friday in Seville, Spain, after only 20 moves.

The score is now 5-5. Each player has won two games, and six have been drawn. Six wins, or 12 1/2 points, are needed for victory in the 24-game match.

In Friday’s game, Kasparov opened 1 e4 for the first time in the match. Karpov chose the Caro-Kann Defense, one of the safest replies, and quickly reached an equal position. The game contrasted sharply with the three previous games, which were very hard fought and lasted 79, 50, and 70 moves.
