Share

Oceanside High School may have found a solution to its scoring problems Friday night in sophomore quarterback Jerry Garrett.

Garrett, who became eligible for the varsity this week, rushed for two touchdowns and threw a touchdown pass to Terry Vaughn as Oceanside beat visiting Avocado League rival El Camino, 31-0.

A win next week at Escondido would give the league title to Oceanside (4-3-2, 4-1-1). El Camino (4-5, 3-3) was eliminated from contention.

Oceanside’s offense had scored only 14 points in its last two games. An interception provided the other seven points.

Garrett boosted that offense Friday, when he replaced starting quarterback Anthony Mauro in the first quarter and rushed 33 yards for a touchdown on his first series.

Garrett threw a 28-yard scoring pass to Terry Vaughn in the second quarter to make the score 12-0 at halftime.

“We’ve anticipated Garrett’s arrival the whole season,” Oceanside assistant John Carroll said. “He just turned 16 this week. We hope he can continue to do the job.”

Garrett, who rushed for 158 yards on 9 attempts and completed 4 of 7 passes for 79 yards, also scored on a 71-yard run in the fourth quarter.
