Whittier College buildings sustained $600,000 worth of damage in the October earthquakes, including toppled chimneys and cracked walls, President Eugene Mills announced. More than 30 structures were damaged, including a small house that had to be razed, Mills said.

The Oct. 1 quake and its aftershocks, blamed for more than $200 million worth of destruction in Southern California, did substantial damage to the college library and to Naylor Hall, he said.
