Kasparov Defeats Karpov After Adjournment, Takes 6-5 Lead

World chess champion Gary Kasparov won the 11th game of his match with challenger Anatoly Karpov on Tuesday to seize a 6-5 lead in the championship.

The game was adjourned Monday, and when it resumed, Karpov resisted for less than 15 minutes before resigning after Kasparov’s 50th move.

It was a serious defeat for Karpov. He played the white pieces, and it was the first time Kasparov has led in the match.

The winner of the 24-game series will be the first player to score six victories or get 12.5 points. Kasparov has scored three victories and Karpov two, with six games drawn.

Kasparov’s triumph followed a blunder by Karpov on the 35th move in the first session of play Monday, throwing away a rook for a bishop.

“I think Karpov will always remember this 11th game as his black Monday,” commented Danish International Master Bjarke Kristensen. “If I had shares in Karpov, they would surely fall. His chances in the match have plummeted.”

Kasparov, 24, comes from Baku, the capital of the southern Soviet republic of Azerbaijan. Karpov, 36, lives in Moscow.

The 12th game is scheduled for today with Kasparov playing white.
