Brigham Young University apologized for failing to acknowledge the national passing record San Diego State quarterback Todd Santos set in Saturday’s game in Provo, Utah.

“I’ve come to San Diego to apologize to Todd Santos, to apologize to this community and to apologize to fans everywhere,” BYU executive vice president John B. Stohlton said during a news conference.

“Our failure to honor Todd is frankly an embarrassment to us, and we want to publicly make amends for that,” he said.

Santos became the National Collegiate Athletic Assn.’s major college passing yardage leader Saturday, when he threw for 248 yards, raising his career total to 10,661 yards in San Diego State’s 38-21 loss to BYU.
