Garden Grove League : Bolsa Grande Completes First Perfect Season

Bolsa Grande High School defeated Kennedy, 48-0, Friday night to clinch its second consecutive Garden Grove League championship and complete the first undefeated season in the school’s 26-year history.

The Matadors (10-0, 7-0) scored on their first three possessions to take a 21-0 first-quarter lead. Ricky Lepule’s 26-yard touchdown run opened the scoring, followed by a 38-yard touchdown pass from Damon Fisher to Mark Miller and a 2-yard touchdown run by Travin Lui.

Lui gained 130 yards in 11 carries.

Fisher, Lepule and Lui all entered the game with a chance to surpass 1,000 yards rushing this season. That would have made Bolsa Grande the first Orange County team to have three players rush for more than 1,000 yards in a single season.

Lepule and Lui reached the mark early in the first half, but despite a 55-yard touchdown run in the second quarter, Fisher ended the game 15 yards shy.

With time running out in the game, Bolsa Grande Coach Greg Shadad kept Fisher on the sidelines. “I don’t want to have to use him at the end of the game in that situation,” Shadad said. “He’ll get his yardage next week.”

Brian Nuez added a two-yard touchdown run and Lepule, who finished with 132 yards, scored his second touchdown on a 28-yard third-quarter run. Danny Jimenez ended the Matador scoring with a four-yard run in the fourth quarter.

Kennedy (2-7-1, 2-4-1) got as close as the Bolsa Grande nine-yard line in the third quarter, but Jimenez intercepted Irish quarterback Pete Montera’s pass to end the threat.

Despite the lopsided score, the Matadors were far from perfect. They were penalized 17 times, including numerous personal fouls late in the game. Kennedy committed four penalties.

“We definitely played a ragged game with the penalties,” Shadad said. “We haven’t had problems like this in any other game this season.”
