San Diego Sports Et cetera : SDSU Soccer Team Advances to the Final of Midwest Regional

Kyle Whittemore scored twice to lead San Diego State to a 2-1 NCAA Division I men’s soccer victory at St. Louis University on Sunday.

Whittemore, a senior, became the Aztecs’ all-time career scoring leader with the goals. Whittemore has 58 career goals, surpassing the previous record of 57 held by Micael Holmstedt.

The Aztecs (17-5) advance to the Midwest Regional final, where they will play Southern Methodist University in Dallas either Saturday or Sunday.

St. Louis (12-7-1) scored first on a goal by Steve Eise. Whittemore tied the match with 54 seconds remaining in the first half. Whittemore scored the winning goal with eight minutes remaining in the match.

BASKETBALL Michael Wiley and Gib Hinz scored 17 points each to lead Athletes in Action to a 92-78 victory over the University of Houston in Texas.

AIA (12-0) also had 16 points from Wally Rank off the bench. Richard Hollis had 31 points, including five three-pointers, to lead Houston.

VOLLEYBALL The top-ranked UC San Diego women’s volleyball team will travel to Chicago for the semifinals of the NCAA Division III national championship tournament.

The Tritons (29-4) are trying to become the first team to win consecutive Division III volleyball championships.

UCSD will play fourth-ranked Illinois-Benedictine (42-2). Elmhurst College (39-8), which is hosting the semifinal round, plays second-ranked Juniata (53-3) Friday. The winners play for the national championship Saturday.
