Martha V. Weishaupt, who has been a City Council member for more than 17 years, has been chosen to serve her fifth term as mayor, succeeding Sal Sapien, whose term ended Nov. 10.

Weishaupt, a retired businesswoman, was first elected mayor by her fellow council members in 1968, again in 1969, then in 1979, and 1984.

Weishaupt and her husband, William, have lived in Stanton since 1956. The longtime councilwoman has served two separate stints on the council--the first from 1966 through 1970, and the second, when she was returned to office in 1974, until the present.
