Golf Roundup : Wales Beats Scotland in Playoff

Ian Woosnam and David Llewellyn outlasted Scotland’s team in a two-hole sudden-death playoff Saturday and brought Wales its first victory in the 33rd World Cup of Golf at Kapalua, Hawaii.

Woosnam, who won the individual title over Scotland’s Sandy Lyle by five strokes with a 274, and Llewellyn each made two playoff pars and gained the trophy when Sam Torrance missed a par putt on the second hole.

Wales and Scotland tied at the end of the regulation 72 holes at 574, two under par, after a final round that resembled a survival test, with players wading through pouring rain and wind gusts,

The United States’ team of Ben Crenshaw (74 for 286) and Payne Stewart (74 for 290) finished third.

Woosnam earned $50,000 as the individual winner and $100,000 as a member of the winning team. Llewellyn earned $100,000.

Gene Littler shot a four-under-par 67 for a 138 total and a one-stroke lead over Bob Charles and Orville Moody, who each shot 70s, after two rounds of a $300,000 PGA seniors tournament at Key Biscayne, Fla.

American Craig Stadler birdied the final hole for a 69 and a 205 total that gave him a one-stroke lead over Japan’s Tadami Ueno, who had a 72, entering the final round of the $1-million Dunlop Phoenix tournament at Miyazaki Japan.
