The glitter of Rodeo Drive and Montana Avenue aside, school districts in Beverly Hills, Santa Monica-Malibu and Culver City are hurting financially just like their more unglamorous neighbors, school officials say. In fact, the need is great enough that residents are being asked to donate their tax rebates to counter the school budget cuts.
The nonprofit Beverly Hills Education Foundation hopes to raise $100,000 by persuading 1,000 residents to hand over their checks, according to Helen Molitz, campaign coordinator.
The districts are among those that lobbied to have a $1.1-billion state budget surplus applied to public education. However, Gov. George Deukmejian and the Legislature decided to send out rebate checks ranging from $32 to $118 to 12 million Californians.
