Hollywood Is Theme of Several Exhibits This Month

A number of other Hollywood-themed exhibitions, including two at the Natural History Museum, have opened or will open this month. Here is a list:

NOW OPEN

California Museum of Science and Industry (700 State Drive, (213) 744-7400). Open seven days a week, 10 a.m.-5 p.m. No admission charge. “Special Effects: The Science of Movie and Television Magic,” more than 100 miniatures, masks, models, drawings, animation cels and other items that Hollywood employs to frighten, delight and enthrall moviegoers. Ends Jan. 3.

Louis Newman Galleries (322 N. Beverly Drive, Beverly Hills, (213) 278-6311). Tue.-Sat., 10 a.m.-9:30 p.m.; Sun., Mon., 10 a.m.-6:30 p.m. “The Golden Age, Batiste Madalena’s Paintings for the Movies,” hand-painted movie posters made between 1924 and 1928. Ends Dec. 31.

“Hollywood People,” photographs of 50 celebrities from People magazine, including Elizabeth Taylor, Clint Eastwood, Katharine Hepburn, Madonna, Meryl Streep, Steven Spielberg and others. Ends Feb. 21.

“Hollywood Today: Paintings by Brian Shapiro,” more than 50 oil paintings depicting behind-the-scenes Hollywood: writers, camera operators, lighting technicians, makeup artists, editors, musicians, actors, set designers and others at work. Ends Feb. 21.

“Masters of Starlight: Photographers in Hollywood,” about 200 photographs from 1913 to 1970 by 44 Hollywood still photographers. Ends Feb. 21.

“Hollywood and History: Costume Design in Film,” 50 film costumes, several hundred designers’ sketches, movie stills and publicity photographs. Ends March 6.
